warm-up season!
The mornings have a bite to them again. Hoodies are back, the trees around town are going gold, and suddenly a hot drink and a warm bagel sandwich sound a lot better than anything iced.
Quick honesty check before we go any further: we don’t do a pumpkin-everything menu. What we do is the same thing we’ve done since 1996. Our bagels are made from scratch, proofed for 48 hours, hand boiled, and baked fresh every day. It turns out that’s exactly what you want on a chilly fall morning.
So here’s our guide to brunch in Bloomington this season: the everyday favorites we reach for when it’s cold out, and which of our three shops fits your morning.
What brunch looks like at BBC
Brunch at BBC is a late-morning thing: a warm bagel sandwich, a hot drink, and maybe a fruit cup if you’re feeling responsible. Our kitchens wrap up in the early afternoon, so don’t sleep in too late. Check your shop’s hours before you head out.
Every shop has its own personality, so pick the one that fits your plans.
Downtown · 238 N Morton St
Downtown on Morton Street: the slow weekend brunch
Our Morton Street shop at 238 N Morton St is the classic downtown stop. It’s the one for a slow Saturday when you’ve got nowhere to be.
What we’d order:
- Lotsa Lox: your choice of schmear with smoked nova lox, capers, tomato, purple onion, and a pickle on the side. It’s a brunch classic for a reason.
- Super Nova: for the warm version, the same smoked nova lox with melted cheese and a fresh fried egg.
- Hot Chai: sweet spiced chai with steamed 2% or oat milk. Make it “dirty” with a shot of espresso if you need the extra push.
Near IU · 113 N Dunn St
Dunn Street: brunch between classes (and midterms)
The Dunn Street shop at 113 N Dunn St is our near-campus regular, and it’s where you can pick up your online order. If you’re heading to class or the library, see our guide to breakfast near IU campus too.
What we’d order:
- Wake & Bake: your bagel, cheese, and schmear with a freshly cooked egg and a hash brown tucked inside. Add ham, spicy sausage, bacon, or turkey if it’s that kind of day.
- Hot & Bothered: a toasted bagel with melted cheese and a fried egg, drizzled with Mike’s Hot Honey. Sweet heat for a cold morning.
- Iced S’mores Latte: for the people who refuse to give up iced drinks until there’s snow on the ground. We see you.
East Side · 913 S College Mall Rd
College Mall Road: an easy stop for families and shoppers
On the east side, our College Mall Road shop at 913 S College Mall Rd is an easy stop before an afternoon of shopping, or a weekend treat with the kids.
What we’d order:
- Hot Chocolate: steamed milk with Ghirardelli chocolate, topped with whipped cream. It’s a big hit with the little ones (and the grown-ups too).
- Egg & Cheese: a toasted bagel with melted cheese and a fried egg. Simple, warm, and easy for everyone to agree on.
- Hot Mess: a toasted bagel with melted cheese and cream cheese, plus a meat if you want it. Seriously, it’s a mess. Grab extra napkins.
Our cold-weather drink lineup
If you’re looking for a coffee shop in Bloomington that also happens to bake real bagels, here’s what’s keeping us warm this season:
- Coffee: locally roasted drip coffee in small, medium, or large
- Hot Latte and Hot Mocha: made with locally roasted Partridge & Quigley espresso
- Hot Chai: sweet and spiced, and you can add espresso to make it dirty
- Hot Chocolate: Ghirardelli chocolate and whipped cream
You can add a flavor shot to most drinks. See the full lineup on our menu.
