Turkey Trots – 7:30am Thanksgiving at BBC on Dunn St.

Home Again!

This is just a glimpse of our newest/oldest store at 113 N Dunn St.  This was the original BBC location 21 years ago and now replaced with an amazing new building.  We continue to focus on our locally boiled bagels and great service.  Please feel free to visit any of our four locations anytime you are in town or in need of your bagel fix.

Thank you to all the local builders for making this happen and to the community for your patience during this last year.  It takes a village to improve the BBC and thank you for being part of ours.

No easy way!

All of us at the BBC.

Beginnings, Endings and the Hole in Between

20+ years ago, I decided I wanted to open a bakery. I was lucky to get hired as a night baker at the Daily Bread. I was even luckier to be trained by Rob Himmel. He was the perfect teacher; an infectious joy of baking, a great East Coast sense of humor and the patience to teach a novice the ropes of commercial baking.

Rob and I stayed in touch through the years as he developed the successful City Bakery and I started the Bloomington Bagel Co. Eventually he started selling our bagels and we would employ his staff when he closed for seasonal breaks. The best part was sharing joint custody of the ever famous Bagel Dave Boyer.

A few months ago, Rob was considering taking an extended break. He still had a remaining lease but felt it was a good time to consider stepping out of the baking business. I was honored when Rob asked the Bloomington Bagel Co to assume his lease. And we are.

Today we open our fourth Bloomington Bagel Co at 1318 E. Third St. And this could not have happened without Rob’s support and the support of the new owner of Bear’s Place, Andrew Thomas. If you haven’t checked out Bear’s Place recently, please do. They have renovated, added a new menu, patio and the BBC.

I am even prouder to tell you that Bagel Dave will continue in his role of Master of Bagel Ceremonies!

Thank you as always to the Bloomington community for your support. It takes a village to start a small business and because of your support, we continue to grow the hole thing. Sorry, I couldn’t resist. At least I kept it PG.

We remain at your service and “Locally Owned and Boiled!”

Happy 20th BBC Anniversary!

Happy 20th BBC Anniversary to our family, friends, staff and guests. It has been an amazing journey. And we are excited to share with you our plans as the journey continues.

We never imagined a successful 20 year run and neither did our equipment. Or the building. In the last year our oven broke, our roof started leaking and the signs became clear that we had outlived the life span of our building.

Starting August 4th, you will find that our Dunn St. store has moved next to Nick’s in the old Panda Express building. Same hours, same food, and same dedication to ‘East Coast Bagels with Midwest’ service. We will be spending the next year at this site as we contribute to urban renewal by tearing down the ugliest building downtown. Yes, you can fix ugly.

The BBC would not be able to start this next chapter without you. When the going has gotten tough, the support of the Bloomington community kept us going. Whether it was the Big Dig, bigoted protestors or tornado like winds, we have persevered together.

We can only imagine what excitement is waiting for us the next 20 years. A little less excitement would be okay too.

You have filled our Hole with love. Thank you from the bottom of our kettle.

We remain ‘Locally Owned and Boiled!”

Spring Break 2016 – March 12-20

All locations closing at 3 pm!

It’s that time of the year again, where Bloomington clears out and feels empty without the hustle and bustle of the academic community.

Accordingly, we adjust our hours and close at all our locations at 3 pm for the whole week, March 12-20. So get your bagels early, and have a good vacation!
